Why the brief matters more.

Process · May 2026

Most clients think the brief is a form. A checklist. Logo, website, colours. It isn't.

The brief is the first design artefact of the project. It is where you figure out what you are actually trying to make before you try to make it. Get this wrong and everything downstream inherits the error.

The discomfort of answering hard questions is smaller than the cost of building the wrong thing beautifully.

I've done projects where the brief was a one-paragraph email. The design work that followed was fine. The client was happy. But six months later the brand wasn't working.

The design is just the brief made visible.
